2002 C2 Cab Test Drive
Just back from test driving my first C2 cab, a 2002 Orient Red Metallic over Cinnamon Brown Special leather. 1st impression as i pulled out of the dealership was “OMG there is no sports exhaust, where is THAT sound?” Car handled well, accelerated strongly, idled quietly, but the lack of the guttural sound was disappointing. Car shifted very smoothly and the clutch was much firmer than on my 03 4s.
Cosmetically the exterior paint had its share of rock chips and the soft top needs repair. Factory “high gloss” rims were embarrassingly in need or refurbishment and the interior leather needed a thorough cleaning. Horseshoe button to raise/lower top didn’t function but drivers door key lock worked to raise/lower it without issue. Rear windows worked well but drivers window regulator was not working.
I’ve posted some pictures along with a short audio of banks 2 and 1 after car was driven for 30-40 minutes. Curious if the sound is normal?
Asking $17.5. Think this is a pass but appreciate any comments.
Both sides were bad

Here’s the audio of just bank #2. File was too large to upload so i had to shorten it to 4 seconds.

Pass at $17.5. I would give $6K because it needs $6K of work to make it acceptable. A car that used and unloved in so many ways will come back to bite you. There are much better deals. Keep looking. The 2002 engine has the smaller single row IMSB bearing and is much more prone to grenading the engine, so you would have to schedule a replacement ASAP. Given the looks of it, probably not many oil changes done. That's a bad thing....
If tempted - Get an independent PPI and go over everything.

Too many cosmetic issues to begin with and the roof may or may not be a serious problem. The roof on my 2000 C4 Cab looked the same on the drivers side. Problem was diagnosed as a loose cable which was fixed for about $250 but the problem on this car could be a broken cable which would cost more, times 2 if the problem is the same on the other side.
I'm no expert but I've driven enough 911's to know that the engine doesn't sound "right." Wouldn't even touch that car w/o doing a full PPI focusing on the engine AND proof that at least the IMS was done but it wouldn't be worth the $ to even consider paying for a PPI to be done because of the color/cosmetic issues that already turn me off.
FWIW, I bought a 2000 C4 Cab last fall for $15k in a color combo I liked w/NO cosmetic issues and the IMS done which sounds a lot better than yours but that still cost me $3k and several months to fix some relatively "minor" electrical/mechanical problems. How much it would cost to fix this 996 to your satisfaction is unknown (the engine being the greatest risk) but whatever it costs it will probably be far more than the $3k I spent.
So, I suggest that you just keep on looking for a better car.

I would pass at that price.
Too many issues.
Mileage(Looks like 120K+ to me) interior and exterior issues should have droped that price significantly IMHO.
I would think you could find another lower mileage, better cared for, manual, Cabriolet for that price.
Re-chroming the wheels is probably going to be very expensive.

Thanks. I’m actually helping a friend from Chicago search for his first 911, I stupidly own 2 4s’ already. His wife has vetoed many colors and their 1st choice is red so I checked this one out for them. Had it passed my preliminary inspection i would have had my indy do a thorough PPI, including bore scope.
I personally don’t think the color combo is bad, i just don't like the look of a cab unless the top is down. I was shocked however that a dealership, in this case VW, would not do anything to get the car looking better prior to listing it. The rims are an eyesore, the top is bad on both sides, one headlight is perfect and the other is cloudy, the drivers door window regulator is shot, and the interior leather hasn't been cleaned in the least.

I really don't understand a dealership not polishing headlights, replacing regulators, and having the leather cleaned and repainted/dyed if necessary.
They should do that for ALL cars they sell!
All of that is cheap!
I can see them not fixing the top completely, but you would think it would work electrically.
When someone wants to test drive a convertible, they want to try it top down.
That's the best way to do a test drive because it hides squeaks and rattles!
If you have a good technician, he will know to google top issues and can likely find a cheap-ish repair for most tops.
The wheels might be tough to replace...If I were flipping it, I would likely repaint them black or silver.
It would be cheaper than re-chroming or buying 2 new wheels.

A pretty nice driver cabrio with 80K miles and IMS/clutch/etc. done, with a brand new top, sold on BAT today for $16,500 + 5% buyers premium. It had an accident showing on Carfax but apparently was pretty minor. The peanut gallery seemed to think it was a good car.
Just one data point...

Yes, all else being equal a cab is probably worth 10% less than a coupe. But that price was still crazy low - for that mileage and condition high teens would be have been expected. So not sure exactly what happened there. The right cab can still be worth some money - a green one sold on BAT a few weeks ago for around $30k, but it was perfect, low miles, no stories and everything done.
I'm in my '99 for more than it is worth but it has been a good car. Paid $17k in 2018 for mine with around 70k miles, now it has 78k miles. Replaced clutch when I bought it and did a new IMS bearing, plus some minor suspension work. Put new tires on it, had all fluids flushed etc. It now needs a top, so once the top is on it will have around $23+ in it and it is probably worth just under $20k. But I'm not planning on selling it any time soon.

Can't believe Porsche didn't offer a "cab delete" option.
