Question Failed engine, anything worth saving?

I finally tore down my engine that broke some years ago. I was hoping that the case might have been ok but clearly not, the crank is probably gone also. Is there anything I should save for spares? Half a case? Pistons? From the top end I´ll save the heads of course.

Wow, that's some serious destruction right there, my condolences. How'd it happen, routine operation, or race related?

It happened on a track but no competition, just for fun. All three chain tensioners had been mounted in the wrong places by previous owner so I´m thinking it could have been part of the reason it failed, or just oil starvation.

Save everything, you never know down the road if/when people will start fixing parts that are considered junk today. You still got some usable parts: sump plate, IMS, heads, the block might be a candidate for a full sleeve conversion.

The bad case half could be used for practice installing wrist pins if nothing else.

I'd be interested in the crank if it isn't in too bad of shape.
I'd use it for instructional purposes only...once I'm able to have another automotive class. (Covid-19 sucks!)
A broken rod/damaged piston would be great for Automotive 101 classes. (Here's what happens if...)

I held onto my blown up engine and have given away a lot of parts to people that needed them. You'd be surprised how a part you might throw away today could be of use to another rennlister in the future.

That case is fixable. Don't toss it. We've repaired worse.

Wow...looks identical to my engine when it blew up....For mine it was clearly oil starvation on the same cylinder as yours. The Crank was worn and discolored from overheating at that location.

I still have the LN bearing from that engine when I disassembled which of course was intact....

Charles, is the bearing still useable?

Nope, bearing should not be reused unless it's an IMS Solution, which would just need to be washed out.

The con rod journal isn't blue enough to show oil starvation. Something else in the journal let go, maybe the bolts.

Even if it only had 5 miles the debris in the oil got into the bearing and compromised it.

Yeah, makes sense since there is no seal on one side....
