which Bosch cam sensor for 996.2?
I need a cam sensor for my 2002 Targa. I took both sensors out and they have different Bosch numbers, and no Porsche part numbers, so I assume they are not original to the car. One has 0-232-103-022 BOSCH on it, and the other one has 0-232-103-040 BOSCH. They measure exactly the same distance from the o-ring to the end of the magnetic probe. There are subtle differences between the housings, but only on the outside shape, not concerning the position of the mounting hole or the electrical connection. So, are these sensors interchangeable? In my pricing research, the 022 is a little higher than the 040 on the discount sites, like Ebay, for new, in-the-box Bosch sensors. But there is only about $15 difference between them. Either way it's a good deal, considering that these are north of $200 at the dealer sites. But is one of these different on the inside? They are both three wire.

The "022" fits the 3.4 engines and is the same as 996-606-106-02/04
The "040" fits the 3.6 engines and is the same as 996-606-106-03
But Auto Atlanta shows a discrepancy in the 02 year model, so to be sure which one fits, call an Authorized Porsche Dealer and use the VIN number encase there is a "vin split".
In the Porsche world, there is always an "exception to the rule"..

That is so helpful, thanks very much! I just went on Ebay and found an 040, new, at a deep discount in the U.S. I'm buying it today and should be able to swap out the 022 version. Maybe that's why the DME was shutting the engine down after start (see my other thread on that subject).
