Question What's the trick?

How can I put my cab top down while moving? Is there a 'switch' the dealer has to set?

Right now it only works with pbrake on...

Thanks!
Rob

No trick. Only 2003 cars and newer can lower top while in motion.
Except if your car is ROW model, then you could even use the remote to operate top

Oh, sorry. Didn't see the 04 C4S Cab.
In that case, try to lower it while moving less than 20MPH. Go to the dealer if it still doesn't work.

It seems it only works if I have the parking brake up... even if I'm not moving it won't work. There must be a setting the dealer can change, I'm taking her in on Monday for an oil change so I'll have them look at it.

There is also a mod to allow older cars to lower the top while moving (at a reasonable speed). You can read about it here

Yes, I've seen that. I was pretty certain that the newer models were able to do it by default but I guess not.

Then I would say that it's nothing mroe than a switch. Try to defeat the switch and that might make the top operate while the car is moving.

Just take apart the center console by the e-brake and take a look.

Someone posed this question to the PCA tech rep. Here is the info:

Classification: Electrical
Subject: All 996 Cabrio, parking brake/convertible top interlock [copied from Boxster section]

Question:
I would like to disable the interlock that requires my parking brake to be set before the top will operate. I read that the new 996 cabriolet can be rolling and the top will still operate. The interlock is very inconvenient, preventing me from operating the top in slow, creeping traffic where it would be perfectly safe to do so. Can you tell me what to do to make this possible? Thanks!

Answer:
You need to ground terminal A5 on the top control unit. You will need to pull down the relay board above the fuse box and find the wire for pin A5, cut it and then ground the wire, the wire is brown with a yellow stripe on it.

I would be very interested if anyone has tried this on a 996. I
have done Loren's mod and it works fine but still have to pull the hand brake up one notch while moving. It would be great to overcome this
problem. Jeff (Toolpants), have you tried the above mod?

I've done the mod as well (speedometer hack and adding a control unit to make the button 1-touch on my 2001.)
I like the simple interlock of having to pull the parking brake up just one click. It's my piece of mind that a curious passenger's "what's this do?" at highway speed doesn't turn into a $5000 oops (more I guess if the car goes airborne with a sail on its back). I seriously doubt driving with the parking brake up one click is creating any excessive wear - actually I doubt the brake is even making contact at that point.

Does the 2004 model have 1-touch control to the top? Or do you still have to hold your finger there for 15 - 20 seconds?

You have to hold the button down. I would also like to make that mod, one touch button seems like the way to go.

The fuse assignments must have changed with the C4S cabs... they are as follows:

Row A
No convertible top mentioned...

Row B
1 Instrument cluster, Tiptronic, diagnosis, Convertible top control unit (911)
5 Reversing light, convertible top control unit (911), outside mirror adjustment

Row C
3 Central locking/alarm system, power windows, inside lights, convertible top (911), sunroof (911)

Row D
3 Convertible top drive, sunroof (911)

Can you share how you did the one touch button?

Thanks,
Rob

Rob, have your local dealer fix it..it should operate when the car is moving. Warranty will cover it. you can even bring it whenever it is convenient for you

Thanks Alfie.

I didn't think I needed to mod anything since Porsche is advertising this fact. I have the car scheduled to go in on Monday...

Thanks again Alfie!
