Default Moving on

Just sold my 996.1 yesterday. I loved the car and it had no problems, but for me was a little to delicate.
I understand a high performance vehicle will have some weird issue(s) but when reading this forum these have more than their share.
Plus I had my left knee replaces then have surgery on my foot on the same leg
Loved the way it handled and rode, plus for a 21 year old car was still pretty quiet.
I was glad to own it and sorry to see it go as I usually am with any of my vehicles, except my ridgeline, never fell in love with it.
Hope you all enjoy yours and take care

Thanks
LJ

Sad reading stories like this. At the heart, you really enjoy the experience of owning on of the best sports cars on the planet, but the physical side of you said it was time to bring it to a close. Hanging the hat up is always the hardest. I've seen it in my family. My grandfather loved nothing more than getting into his old Chevy and driving for a biscuit and morning newspaper. It was a sad day when the cops had to pull him over for driving down the wrong side of the expressway. It was then he fully realized that his time was up. He handed the keys over to my father with tears streaming down his face. This is a WWII vet who never cries at anything, but this was a sad day for him. In some ways, freedom was encapsulated in that ol' Chevy.

LJ, I wish you Godspeed sir. Maybe you could trade in for an automatic 911? If not, just count your blessings knowing you got a trill of a lifetime that not many get to experience.

"but for me was a little to delicate."...

Ugh... spoken like someone who rarely takes/took their precious Porsche out of the garage. These cars/engines are far from delicate if driven and maintained properly. There are plenty of folks here who have tracked/auto crossed and/or HPDE'd their 996's for years without incident. It's a shame you couldn't bond with it, but since you didn't you're doing the right thing. These cars were made to be driven - not "owned" by people who are afraid to drive them...

Well done LJ, you gave it several good years and left it better off for the next owner. I hope your medical procedures are smooth👍💪

Those that have had to fight for their freedom cherish it far more than those that take it for granted. I love how I feel while driving, especially in my Porsche & dread the day I can no longer get in & out of it

Thanks for sharing this story. These stories really pull at my heart strings.

I wish I appreciated the sacrifice of The Greatest Generation when I was younger. Now I look for every opportunity to thank a WWII vet any chance I get.

He was a good man. Grew up out of the depression. His father was killed walking to work. Hit by a car. He then had to be "the man" in the family and help provide which he did everyday of his life by traveling around the country building bridges and roads under FDR's civil conservation corp after getting out of the military. When he traveled around the country doing hard labor, he'd send most of his money back to his family. He even moved near his cousins growing up to help take care of them as well. Very humble man with very little in life that was material. At the end of his life, his one and only goal was to live long enough take care of my grandmother unto death. At the end of her life, she was suffering from a severe form of dementia, but died peacefully. He died in a VA hospital just 5 weeks after receiving word that she pasted. He met his goal and was at peace.

I have the fear lol! I've only had mine a few months, but after spending time reading on the forum I'm already debating selling. Love the car and it makes me insanely happy to drive it! Maybe 996 turbo is the better engine? Haven't done much research on them yet though.

Posts like this just further support the fact that we're all unique and have different comfort zones, philosophies, incomes, and reasons for owning a Porsche.

For every post like this there's one about an owner who loves their car so much they're willing to spend more than their original purchase price to nurse a 996 back to a healthy life.

I guess I don't have any real point other than, vive la différence.

...that would be me. If it ever grenaded, I'd buy a used engine and either rebuild it myself, or have it rebuilt.
At the moment with my schedule, it would have to be rebuilt for me.
If I'm retired when it happens, I'll rebuild it myself.
My biggest worry is the dumb___ driving next to me in the Lexus/Toyota/Honda/Big ole truck that might "total" my 996.
Then I'd be really and truly sad!

I've decided that if my engine goes, I'm buying a cheap beater to drive while the M96 gets rebuilt.
I would NEVER sell it as a roller.
If I do an elective rebuild and send it off to FSI, my only unknown is what I'm going to buy to drive while waiting for my car to come back.
Stupid me would buy another 996 or a Boxster to drive...then I might rinse and repeat.

I think part of my problem is that since I bought mine during winter, I've spent more time reading than i have driving! There is light at the end of the tunnel! I think we may only have another couple weeks of salty roads!. Also, I was thinking to myself last night. If the car is $30k and an engine rebuild is around $25k you would be all in around $50-$60k. I can't think of another car out there, classic or modern for that $50-60k that i would rather have!!

I've had 2 people that i know fairly well "bash" me for having it. One basically said, "why would you buy that foreign piece of crap" "you should have gotten a vette" another told said 911s are "girly". Porsches sure do draw some attention I'm finding out! lol
