986 passenger window does not drop while opening the door
Hello All,
my 1999 Porsche Boxster passenger window does not drop (inch I suppose) when I try to open the door. either from inside latch or from outside latch.
I do hear sound that it tries to lower the window, but window actually does not lower.
That is the only problem.
The window lowers as it should correctly when I unlatch (top) to open the top, The window also opens and closes when I use the power button.
So, It is just that it does not lower when I try to open the door and I am scared that the glass could shatter. Any suggestions? Thanks much.

Hi Sam7768,
There is a microswitch on both the exterior and interior door handles that prompt the 1" drop on the window. These can and do go bad and could cause your problem, but it sounds like they are activating but not pulling the window down. On my 2003 Boxster I experienced the exact same problem and it was the window regulator itself. The main cable tends to stretch and lose it's tension causing the "no-drop" problem you have. There are some threads here on rennlist and other forums for some DIY zip tie fixes that can remedy the problem, but I chose to replace my regulator myself. Part was about $100 all in and it took me an afternoon in the garage pulling off the door panel and replacing the regulator. If you are remotely handy with tools you would be able to easily tackle this yourself. Here is a great DIY tutorial from Pelican Parts and you can find a bunch of additional information in this forum as well:

Best of luck!

There’s some good YouTube videos you can follow. Here’s one I used for my 996, even though the video is a Boxster.
You can buy a quality regulator online from RockAuto, it’s at least 1/2 the cost of OEM parts.

My passenger window was acting the same way. I could hear the the motor, but the window would not move. I confirmed this by pushing down on the window. There was about 1/2” of slack that allowed the window to go down. Replaced the regulator and all is well.
