OK, the history....replaced AOS, difficulty is NOT overstated, but removed old, placed new, reconnected all other hoses and electrical. THERE WE NO OTHER PARTS REMOVED OR REPLACED, except oil filler tube. In process of replacing new oil filler tube, dropped fixing bolt into block. Dropped pan, found bolt, cleaned surfaces, applied new “gasket in” material, new oil, new filter. Finished AOS project: alternator put back in, timing belt, air box, etc.

The PROBLEM: turned on-car fires up but stops within 1-2 sec. I hear the fuel pump energize. No warning lights, full tank of gas. WTF am I missing here? As I said, NO other parts replaced.

Not sure if this will be helpful, but I had a similar problem with a VW Jetta. Turned out to be a bad fuel pump relay. Did you work on anything in that area?

Go over all of the intake and vacuum hoses/connectors again. You might have something mid-aligned or not seated properly.

I went back and retraced my work. turns out that the front plenum on the left side was NOT connected to air intake manifold, therefore big vac leak. once correctly connected, started up and ran perfectly. I thought that as I backed “outwards” from the AOS, I was properly fitting and tightening everything, but sometimes the wife would come in the garage, or a neighbor, or some distraction (squirrel!!!) and I must have missed it. anyway, all is good now, and no more smoke with the new AOS. Thanks for your input.
