Default Who has tried the muffler delete??

I was thinking about doing this but was wondering how bad is the drone inside the vehicle.
What did you think of the sound?
Did anyone who did this go back?

Thanks

A bunch of people have, seems like you either love it or hate it. I believe a member hear had better results with silencer inserts that helped reduce the drone a bit. I've considered myself, weight savings seem good and I could use some new tips and for whatever reason, stock exhaust tips are quite expensive.

I did this for a drive around the block while I was awaiting some aftermarket mufflers

way, way too loud for normal driving

probably exhausting draining after a day at the track

Did it this past summer on my 99 C2 which is also my daily driver. It definitely is louder and there was a lot of drone so I added the Car Chemistry 3 disc inserts which helped dramatically almost eliminating the drone and the loudness a bit.

My car had muffler bypass installed when I bought it. The quality of the sound was amazing when accelerating from 3k rpm and up. It’s not nearly as loud as an American V8 running straight pipes, but it was still crazy loud.

I picked my wife up from a large building in downtown Chicago and she could hear me coming for several blocks before I got there. The organizer of PCA auto cross in Chicago told me I probably wouldn’t be allowed to compete with an exhaust that loud. It was definitely fatiguing to drive it across Indiana.

I switched to an aftermarket set of mufflers that are still loud, and am much happier now.

Over the years i have learned something simple. A race car is a race car. A street is a street car. You can make your car sound good but it will never sound like a race car. Keep the mifflers

Of course to each his own. I find aftermarket exhausts to be way too loud, let alone skipping mufflers all together. Also, I think the car sounds great stock and I have yet to come across an aftermarket exhaust that I like the sound of.

Do you have any sound clips of this? I want to do this exact thing on my 99.

I'll try to PM you with the sound clip. For some reason I can't seem to post the video(message says it's too big)

I did this to my 996 and as stated above, it sounds awesome near redline but at low RPMs is sounds like crap and is stupid loud regardless how easy you are on the throttle. The cockpit will drone like hell and don't even bother trying to listen to the radio. I have Billy Boat exhaust on my car (headers and mufflers) and that setup sounds really nice. Should have left it alone but thought, since my surcharged 928 has straight pipes and it isn't that terrible, the 996 should be the same......WRONG! The 996 was way louder.

You can try this yourself for free. Just remove the rear bumper and the mufflers and go for for a drive. The sound will be exactly the same since the muffler deletes are nothing more than a foot long pipe bent in a L shape.

Hi - mine came with the muffler delete. I never actually heard it from outside the car. From inside it was relatively quiet at idle but quickly got very loud as I revved up. I'm not a big fan of loud cars of any kind so I put the original mufflers back in. I much prefer hearing the flat-six ENGINE than the EXHAUST - why would anyone give that up, just to impress other people, a lot of whom hate the noise & couldn't care less if it's a Porsche.

I've done it. It's way way to loud. I had to put the factory mufflers back on.
However, since then, I've installed a custom exhaust. It to is way too loud but, it sounds so good, I just can't seem to go back to the factory mufflers, lol. Plus, I also picked up around 20whp/12wtq...

Rdrcr, do you have a dyno sheet you could post that your resulting h.p. and tq. increase ? love to see how much you lost on the bottom end, nice to see you picked on power.
