Default Fuel Pump

My 02, C4s has bout 102k miles, I purchased the car with 98k miles and since have installed a low temp thermostat, a spin on filter adapter and a deep sump pan. I have done these in order to reduce the likelihood of a catastrophic failure with the engine. My engine was replaced by Porsche under warranty in 2007 so it has the large IMS bearing, I removed its outer seal.

I do track the car at DE events, as well as driving it at least ones or twice a week.

My question is around Fuel Pump, reading some postings here it has become apparent to me that fuel pump failure is not a rare occurrence, furthermore it seems that these do not fail completely but instead start to provide lower that required fuel pressure to the engine causing a lean condition that can then cause other catastrophic failure, mostly during extended wide open throttle.

Is there a recommended Fuel pump brand that is prefer, any higher pressure/flow type that is recommended.

While in the tank are there other hoses, fittings, etc I should also replace, remember my car is C4S.

I have a 2000 C2, but recently replaced mine with a VDO fuel pump. So far so good. I got it from pelican at half the cost of the Porsche branded fuel pump. It was cheaper at Rock Auto, but they won't ship to CO because of taxes. It was a pretty simple operation and I only replaced the pump.

I'm pretty confident VDO makes most fuel pumps.

Check out FCP Euro's website. They list which manufacturers supply the OEM parts.

Usually its not a big deal to test your fuel pressure.. I do it regularly on my cars.. Haven't done the 996 yet,, but if its not easy to get at it will be when I'm done.

Thank you, will look into VDO pumps, another question. What are the "saddle" tanks the 4S supposed to have? Apparently there are plastic hoses from them to the pump. Does the new pump bring these? should they even be replaced?

Lately I've been buying a lot of stuff from RM European that was mentioned on this Board. They're in Littleton CO and most of the time they beat even AutohausAZ (my usual go to place) on price. I rarely buy from Pelican anymore because their prices are so high. I don't buy from Rock Auto because their website is a PITA and I feel like I should be using Netscape Navigator to view it.

I need to look them up. I could pick up parts on my drive to or from work.

Even better!

My last order from them was Beru ignition coils for the Cayenne.

$38.50 each from Pelican

$34.76 from AutohausAZ

$28.24 from RM European

So for 8 coils, it was a savings of $75.00 over Pelican. Enough to fill the tank with premium and a six pack.
