Ive decided shifter wise to wait until next PCA meeting/gathering and see if I can get 1st hand look/feel on alternative shifters. I tend to procrastinate anyway so I wasnt replacing my stock anytime soon. Winter tires and new summer tires for next year are needed first.
So I just picked up my new to me 996 today and spent 5 hours driving back home.
It has a B&M short shift and I have to say it's one of the major weaknesses of this car, I really don't like it. Thankfully still has the stock shifter in a box to revert back. Does anyone have experience with the B&M and the function first? I don't mind the factory throw, just want better feel.
Are you sure it's an actual B&M shifter and not just a blue copy?
The OEM B&M is black and has a Porsche part logo stamp on it
Haven't pulled off the shift boot yet, but the box it's in has the B&M stickers and the instruction manual from b&m. I was actually kind of surprised based on what I was reading here, I figured that maybe it was an eBay shifter till I got home and started going through the box of stuff the previous owner gave me and found the B&M stuff.
The car I just got is a 2001 c2 with about 100k on it. Great shape interior and exterior wise. Just needs a solid detail. Mechanically well taken care of, but going to do a full fluids swap soon. I'm sure new trans fluid won't hurt!
Not sure how the B&M is, but it looks similar to the Schnell short throw that I installed. Overall it's not bad for a street car upgrade, reverse is a little weird to get into, but the rest of the gears are pretty smooth. The only thing I can note as a mild downside is that the protruding arm that the shifter fits over isn't as snug as the factory, so the shift **** will tend to slide up after some hard shifting and needs to be pressed back down into place. On the street not a big deal, but on the track could be very troublesome.
