Serial number doesnt precise the model
Hi guys,
My friend and I were talking about our cars (We both own C4S) and he mention that when he's searching on the web with his serial number most sites will say that the car is a Carrera Coupé...
I went on Scouser's Porsche with my VIN just to prove him wrong and I have to admit I cant find where the VIN number would reflect the specific C4S model.
The thing I would like to find out is the 12th digit number which is suppose to be the Vehicule Type Designation, where can I find the reference list of theses numbers?
Mine is refered as a "6"
Any infos on this Vehicule Type Designation which I suppose is the model?
Thanks!

According to the listing in Adrian Streather's '...996 essential companion' RoW VIN are identical up to the 13th digit between carrera 2, 4 and 4s.
USA VIN differentiate between the two at the 5th digit being A for the carrera 2 and 4 Coupé and B for C4S coupe.
All this for any given model year.
Google books might show you the pages if you search for 'Deciphering VIN codes'
12th digit is 'last remaining digit of the type ID number' as in 6 of any 996 (7th and 8th digit show the first two as in '99' for any 99x)

I was under the impression the 5th digit "B" was applied only on the 997 model...
Okay here's my VIN: WP0AA29902S624161
My car is a MY02 C4S
Its has all the features of a 4S so the car is larger, equipped with the big brakes, got the front differential and got the bumper kit.
How can I figure out by the VIN its a C4S?
My friend owns a 03' and the result is the same when entering the VIN: Carrera Couoé and no mention of the 4wd.
Anybody owns a C4S and got the same result when entering the VIN

You can go to the dealership for a build sheet or purchase a COA from Porsche if that would put your mind at rest. But I quickly searched the VIN you posted and it's definitely an authentic Porsche 996 C4S. Don't let Carfax and some of the other vehicle history companies tell you different. They listed my car as an "Carrera S" model and everyone knows Porsche didn't make an RWD NB "S" model.

It take off alot of stress!
Even the dealer seems confused with the serial number for example I ordered the brake lines, from my VIN ,that goes from the caliper to the brake line and they gave me the shorter ones in front like the non-turbo or non-C4S models...
I told him I had the reference numbers but they prefer going with the VIN and it can cause problem as I experienced.
