Cruise control
Non-tip 996. Does anyone EVER use it? I never have and can’t imagine I ever will. Just a thought.

I use it on longer highway drives, for a few mintues when traffic is clear, to relax my leg.
I’m glad it’s there.

Yep, used it tonight. I had a police officer pull in behind me in a 35mph zone. Then he stayed behind me onto the freeway. Followed me for about 6 miles all together. Cruise control set right on the speed limit. I was no fun for him.

Did all 996's come with cruise control? I have an early build (3/98) cabte throttle C2 without funtional cruise control. I have never investigated it.

I’m still in the very early days of owning my first high performance car, let along a 911. Every touch of the throttle brings joy. I hope the feeling never gets old. Please tell me it doesn’t.
It’s not a DD so I’m not usually in traffic, and I’ve yet to go on an extended road trip. I’m also tall which limits my leg room as it is. I do use cruise control on other cars so I’ll keep an open mind.
Thanks for the feedback, this forum significantly enhances my p-car ownership experience. I hope others feel the same.

That feeling doesn’t get old, don’t worry.

I never use cruise control in any car. I just drive as though at any moment, someone will try to merge lanes, crash into me, a pothole or road debris will suddenly appear or a cop will catch me speeding.
I maybe tested it before I bought my car, just to see if it worked.
The fact that early 996s don’t all have CC is awesome. How old school is that! Goes along great with a missing glovebox and a manual headlight switch.

I use it for highway drives and slow roads that are speed traps -- more to keep speed in check than as a convenience, but sometimes for convenience on long drives.
<hopping on soap box>
That said, I positively hate the design of the Porsche/Audi cruise control. Forward is to accelerate, down is to decelerate, I don't remember the rest.
My old BMW 325 had it right -- "up" to speed up, "down" to slow down, "forward" to resume, brake to turn off, "back" to enable -- nothing could make more sense. The 996 and our Audi Q5 cruise control controls make no sense to me. I use cruise infrequently enough that I have to relearn how the controls work each time I use it. I can't remember if the Audi is the same as the 996, but I dislike them both. I got rid of that BMW 20+ years ago and I still remember exactly how it works.

I use mine all the time on long road trips, in any car. The one in the 911 is one of the best I've felt. Maintains dead solid speed very nicely even on hilly terrain. Some cars let the speed vary too much, or don't deal with hills well.
I have to turn the one off in my Audi if the road isn't flat, because going down a hill it will get rolling too fast, then clamp the brakes or downshift suddenly to control the speed. Then going up the next hill it might lose too much speed, and then accelerate hard or drop down a gear to get back up to speed. It's laggy. The Porsche seems to absorb these situations seamlessly and you never even think about it.
Agreed that the stalk directions don't make any sense, but it only takes a minute to memorize them.

My cruise control currently inoperable and I often wished it worked to keep me out of trouble. It's way too easy to exceed the speed limit in this car!
