Default Fuel filter ground wire

So replacing the fuel filter today, I noticed the ground wire hasn't been connected. The wire has been completely broken and separated for what appears to be some time.

What is the point of the ground? I dont recall ever having this on other vehicles in the past.

Would I be fine just continuing on without one? Looks like a pain to try and get a new ground ran down threw wherever it's coming from above.
