Default GBOX rebuild vs ebay tranny

Hi,

I have some noises from my gearbox, I suspect it's the common pinion bearing issue. (See this thread for details, https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...d-in-gear.html)

What would you do:

1. Send it for rebuild to GBOX. Cost will be $2500-$4000 depending on what's broken. It's a minimal of $1200 labour, the bearing it self is $500 and then some other stuff.
There is no 2nd gear pop out.

2. Drive until explodes and get a used ebay transmission. These can be found starting at $1500

I don't mind DIY and have no problem replacing transmissions. Fixing the pinion bearing is a little over my head and I will not attempt that as my first transmission project.

Car is 1999 3.4 C2

I had the same issue and my Indy ordered a rebuilt one from GBOX and had it in 5 days. Comes with the second gear fix built in. $4200 delivered to Grand Rapids, MI. Also included return charges for core.

My 996 had a tranny built by GBOX and functioned great, however, when I put a 997 engine in my car I got a 997S tranny as well for NORSPEC Dismantling. I sold my GBOX transmission and haven't looked back....The transmission is so much better then what was in the 996. So may be that is an option....Going to their EBAY store you can find a bunch of 997 trannys https://norspecdismantling.com/ if it is something you want.

Can you mate a 997 tranny to a 996 3.4?

Had mine rebuilt by Gbox included the pinion bearing about 50k ago and that meant shipping from Canada to their location and back.
They were quick and I was very satisfied. If ever needed again I would use their services.
Buying something like that on Ebay is a roll of the dice and it could be great or also needing a rebuild after you've installed it and
taken a road test with it.

I believe so since my 997 3.8 was mated with my 996.1 transmission for some time so imagine the reverse is true. Dundon motorsports can tell you for sure.

do you remeber how much you paid? Seems like internal parts is pretty pricey, gears are several hundred dollars.

This was about 6 years ago and the price for a synchro refresh and the pinion gear replacement was $2800.00.

Thanks! Sounds reasonable for a minimum job.

The fixed price for labour seems to be $1300. But parts are very pricey, if gears are damaged it quickly adds up!
