The prep and paint correction is more important than the final coating. And the retail products are usually a watered down version sold only to the pros. There are some very good threads in our dedicated Concours Forum.

I've had 5 cars coated now. All with Optimum Opti-Coat Pro+. Been very happy with the results and how it holds up.

Paint correction is more expensive than the coating for sure. Brand new cars I have had done were about $1500. When I had my 996 C2 in midnight blue done it had over 10 hours of paint prep necessary before coating, cost me $3000. Results were incredible.

I tested out a new product from meguires this weekend on my son's Boxster before use on my cars. It's a hybrid ceramic wax and super easy to put on and after the first time it literally takes 3 minutes to apply. Don't know how long it will last but the ease of use over wax makes me a fan. I am sure it is no match for the pure ceramic coatings but the beading with this product is insane.

I did an application of CQuartz to my 996 about a year ago. I did a full prep, taped off trim, compounded, polished, clay bar, then body shop solvent wiptedown. Allowed full day to cure. I was impressed with the initial results, but did hold up as long as I had expected.

There is a very good YouTube video series that has the best comparison of coating products I've seen presented in a scientific way - 34 coatings applied to a hood left in the sun in Texas with periodic washings and updates to show performance. Here is the most recent update at the one year mark for 34 different coatings:

I’ve done both CeramicPro and G-Technic on my cars. Frankly the results were good with both but I completely agree that prep, correction and application skill makes the difference. I became friends with the local installer here in NJ and watching the amount of work he puts in to doing a vehicle shows where the money goes.
