To get a plate that isn't the standard white plate you have to payu a yearly fee. On the plate I'm getting the customized name isn't an additional cost, for some reasons other plates have an additional yearly charge for a customized name.

This yearly plate fee is addition to the yearly registration fee?

While I think they're fun to look at, I would never get one for two reasons:
1. Why pay the govt even more in taxes(license plates are a tax) and custom ones cost more than std ones
2. It's easier for people to remember you, i.e "Yes officer I don't know what kind of car it was but it had a cute little license plate that said xxxxx"

Custom plates are $90-99 per year in Texas.
Just not worth it to me.
Amateur Radio plates with your callsign are free.
I just don't understand the price difference.
You can get Amateur Radio plates in Texas, with the same callsign, for multiple vehicles.
I thought about doing this at one time because it would be cool to have the same plate for all my vehicles.
But I found out that it wouldn't work for the Houston Toll Road Authority.
Their system couldn't handle multiple vehicles with the same plate.

Love it!
Here in Vic (AUS) you don't need to pay yearly fees on the plate itself. The most coveted plates are "heritage plates" which are just numbers - lower the number the higher the price...
E.g a 3 digit number plate might cost you upwards of 200k and a 2 digit closer to 500k... 1 digit can be a few million...

This is mine. It’s just a basic passenger normal plate, not a vanity.

I'm thinking of getting one here in NJ, which is a one time fee of $50. I haven't tested whether any of these are available yet, but here's what I'm thinking. Pretty standard and some are stolen from others here.
PORSCHA
PORSCHE
WTRKULD
SCHNELL
911
2000911
NVR L8
TYPE996
FLATSIX (my favorite, but probably taken)
