Exchange the water pump for the composite. You may need a new light switch if the ignition doesn't cure the lights...I think I spelt that right

For your possible cruse issue there's a micro switch on the clutch that may be the culprit.

Factory parts or using the same OEM manufacturer is typically not much more than the cheap aftermarket. I really don't understand the logic of a cheaper metal impeller water pump to save money when the potential damage/risk is tens of thousand of dollars. Not to mention you won't know there is a problem untill its too late

I say this respectfully, cheap parts are fine on a honda or chevrolet. European cars are much more **** about parts put on them. But too each his own.
Point taken. I'l return the Gates and get a Hella (Behr). I didn't research this enough. Thanks for the advice.

Yes - I figured the light switch is more likely than the ignition switch. Will see soon enough.

I assume you mean at the clutch pedal?

Regarding the service manual - I have one on CD coming. If it proves to be inadequate, I'll get the book.

Bonus! It has a K&N filter. I knew there was something about this car that really made it hum.

Found something I've not seen before. Looks like a little storage "slot" to put a special package. I ended up putting the case for Steve McQueen's LeMans DVD in there. Evidently the car comes with a fancy multimedia device (Pioneer) that will allow viewing a movie on a little screen in the dash. So far I am unable to make it realize I am not driving the car, when it warns against it.

So is this a dealer installed option; or is it aftermarket? Maybe the owner's manual would go there. I did notice a lack of glove box.

Just a quick note to say thank you and PLEASE keep this kind of thread coming. It helps those of us learning about doing our own maintenance.

I have been thinking about it, and I plan to just continue this thread to cover what gets replaced/ repaired and discovered. If others gain from it, all the better.

I noticed. He gets a free pass on this one.

So I found what I believe to be ride-height sensors on each of the left side corners. Both are broken. Are these for headlight aiming? Or some other function?
Left rear shown below.

Just after bringing the car in, on Friday....

Of course I had to take her top off. It is our third date, after all.

I don’t have those sensors on either of my
996’, but I think they’re for the litronic headlights (I have the base halogens).

Until I get an owner's manual...

Performed a compression check. All are 125 psi, with the exception of one at 120 and one at 130. A lot lower than I would hope for, and expect. Engine was ice cold - actually even colder than that. Additionally the compression tester I used is not of the highest quality, nor is it new. Will plan on testing again when things are back together and I can warm the engine.
