Muffler Bracket Bolt

Muffler Bracket Bolt
Another question! When taking off my mufflers, one of the bolts snapped on the bracket. The bolts appear to be welded into the bracket and the bracket itself is very expensive to replace. I was just going to drill out that bolt and grind off the round head and then insert a regular hex head bolt through the hole and tack weld the head. Opinions or has anyone else come up with an easier option?

Exactly as others have said... Mine also came loose, luckily not broken-off like yours, so I asked a friend to tag-welded back on the bracket for me, worked just fine. Like Southernman said, just get a new bolt and tag-weld it back on and you're done. Good-Luck, Cheers,

I bought a new (might have actually been used?) bracket. I also replaced every bolt and nut in the exhaust system I could with a 316 (A4) version. If you can't find 316, use 18-8 (A2)

If you're set up to weld stainless, then tacking a bolt on there should be an easy workaround. (sadly I sold my tig setup, so I can't do stainless anymore...)
Do you want a set of replacements? What year is your car? There are two different versions... I think 996.1 and 996.2 is probably the difference. They don't interchange. I actually have a set of each of those brackets upstairs in the garage if you need a pair for a reasonable price. Private message works.

I quite honestly didn't pay much attention to the bracket itself to see steel type. Even if stainless, I think I can manage a tack weld with my MIG welder. The bolt that is in the oem bracket certainly isn't ss.

Yup, you’re probably correct. I jumped to conclusions based on the way the brackets looked. Sorry.
