Do you mostly use the toggle shifters or full auto? Also when in shift mode can you hit rev limiter or does the automatic prevent and shift for you?

I use the toggle switches when just cruising around, but I have paddles installed also for when I want to drive aggressively around tight corners/track. I NEVER drive in auto mode. In manual mode you can shift when you want to, but if you don't shift, the TCU will shift for you just before rev limit/red line. Also you can downshift anytime you want, but the TCU will not let you downshift if the action will result in over-rev. You can "stack" the down shift( or press and hold the down shift) EARLY, and the TCU will wait until the appropriate time to down shift.

I drive 80+ miles a day, I use a combination of full manual, or D mode. One thing I like doing is staying in D mode and then downshifting when I want acceleration instead of just stomping on the gas in D. I've learned how long it takes to shift/get into power band, kind of fun actually!

I've noticed that I can haul *** better in full D mode now that I did the 90K mile trans filter change.

I never use D. Installed a 3 spoke wheel which has slightly larger buttons and decided against paddles when I saw them in person.

I use both modes. I usually start out in auto mode until the car is up to temp so I don't accidentally exceed 4k before it's warmed up. After that it's in manual mode. I put it into auto when I'm on a highway at cruising speed.

Same here. The manual mode is much better than I expected. Ptech: I didn't know about holding down the button, thank you!!!!

I think I used the auto mode once just to see what it's like. The steering wheel toggle buttons in manual mode work well so I use them exclusively.

Opposite of others. Use auto more. Hated the buttons. But have installed the paddles and use it much more now.

I use both. We are in hilly, curvy areas and use manual mode there. And then oh, here comes a boulevard with plenty of red lights; or oh, here comes a freeway --- just flick it into auto mode and relax. I'm not very good at it yet, but I am also practicing using the pedal in auto mode to "select" a gear without the buttons.

If you are willing to cut up your steering wheel, I don't see why they wouldn't work.

I daily drive my Tip and pretty much only use manual mode - the auto is rather boring to me and constantly tries to upshift to a higher gear than I want (i find myself going 30mph at 2k rpm in 5th gear). Having driven stick on a variety of cars I can state that auto-manual tip on the 911 is just as fun to drive and less hassle in traffic/city

From what I've read on this forum, the tiptronic on the 996.2 onward up to the 997 are better than previous models with more mapping points that ultimately give better throttle response when you hit the gas.
