Unfortunately IMO Chrome hasn't stood the test of time looks wise.
Is the AE chrome or (I thought) polished?

Just went and looked at mine. There is a texture to the metal. Not sure that can be polished. Also there is slight tint to the color, kind of like an ultra light cad plating color. My bet is they are anodized.

Default I would ask 40AE people to chime in, but

Is the AE chrome or (I thought) polished?

If I remember the press release , and I have it somewhere, but I think the shiny look wheels were result of a special peening process, which is probably quicker to produce than polishing, I think provides for a very hard surface.

I wish I had a set for my Targa, always like them, I think they would look even better on a dark car.

Like the 2000 ME, they are called polished look/effect. It is a chrome laminate.

Do you have a AE or ME ?

There s no chrome on AE wheel.

From the press release dated 7/30/2003
The 911 anniversary model is in excellent shape for its 40thbirthday. Distinguishing styling features are the front cooling air openings adopted from the 911 Turbo. The side air intake grilles at the front are painted in body color. Other highly expressive styling details are the left and right sill trims, the shot-blasted, polished 18-inch Carrera wheels and the high-gloss polished exhaust tailpipes.

2-5 years ago I would have hated the chrome. I bought a 996 a few months ago with chrome twists and loved them. Its funny how things can come back in terms of style.

Mine are original to my car. I like them a lot. I had all four refurbished by my Porsche dealer. There not for everyone I get it. But they work for me! And they are 18's!

As in "from the factory," or as in "from when you got the car"?

Wheels are either polished or chromed. Laminates and verniers are for teeth.

Chrome Laminate? Uh, no such thing... "Laminate" means glued. Chrome is an electroplate finish...

Jesus. Chrome = the color.
on the ME the polished (chrome) wheel effect is attained by laminating the paint onto a treated surface (the orange stuff you see when the CHROME paint flakes off.

Since the AE wheels are also described as being POLISHED I assumed the technique was the same or similar.

Anybody else want to nitpick verbiage today?
