Default Ignition/headlight issue?

I've got a 2000 Carrera and last night when I had parked and attempted to take the key out of the ignition it seemed that the key would not turn to it's usual position. After struggling for a few minutes I was able to get it free. Later I was able to put the key back in the ignition and start it back up but it still felt like the key turned a little different than usual. As I was driving the headlights cut out but the parking lights were still on. When I got home I was able to get the headlights back on, but only when the car was parked without the engine running. With daylight savings time upon us I really need the headlights to be working. Has anyone had a similar issue/any guesses at a diagnosis?

You need a new ignition switch....I have had this problem with a friends car....you may even find that wipers don't work either. Once you start the car, try to move the switch back abit and see if headlights turn on.

^Agree. You need to replace the electrical part of the ignition switch. Search this forum for ignition switch replacement.

Yep, had same issue with my 2000 cab with the headlights & stuck key in the ignition, very typical 996 issue... knew right away that it was the ignition switch. Just replace yours and everything should be fine again. Cheers,

Agree with others, ignition switch which is located at the rear of the key assembly is a well-known wear part. If you replace the switch and you still have problems turns the key in the ignition, I'd recommend carefully lubricating the ignition assembly.

Thanks for the input everyone. @DBJoe996 I searched the form as you suggested and it seems this will be a fairly easy DIY project (which my wallet is thankful for). I was hoping to knock it out this weekend but Napa didn't have the switch in stock. Looks like I'll have to wait a little longer.

@lowpue Thanks for the tip on turning the key slightly to the left. That seems to be a good temporary fix.

The $14 NAPA switch typically last for about a year. Hit up the home equity loan and spring for the OEM unit.
