I think the first normal production Porsche 4wd was the 964. IIRC, the 964 was initially released only as a 4wd model, which I think hurt the overall initial perception of the 964 because it weighed so much more than the prior model. I remember thinking Porsche had "lost it" at the time to have only the 4wd version because it was so much heavier even though it performed very well. My complete guess is that wanted to go to 4wd only for safety reasons to tame the rear engine weight bias of all 911's. They came out with the 2wd 964 a year after the 4wd.
Great work. Thank you. How did you research that so fast?
I keep on eye on CL for deals. Father-in-law lives in JAX, so I watch CL there too. I saw the car in the Hartford and knew it was too good to be true. Then I saw it again in JAX. When you posted I just copied the description and search a few major metro areas. Nothing fancy.
I want to say that IIRC the 959 was the first consumer AWD 911. There may have been earlier race car set-ups though.
The 959 was a test bed for a lot of advanced technology. It was 20 years ahead of it's time. It was available to the general public, but it was very expensive and built in limited numbers.
