Ouch. That's looks like the results of a chain break. Glad to see you're not throwing in the towel on the car. Looking forward to seeing it back on the road.

^^ Yup! ^^ Timing chain break would’ve my guess. Also makes sense if the timing was way out of whack and that’s why it threw a CEL. The whole story still seems strange though... where was that short block, in the mechanics back room?

I’m not using the same mechanic that diagnosed the IMS change when I took it when I bought it, some how I feel he did something or had something to do with the engine failure ( that’s my conspiracy thinking) I took the advice from porche owners in Dallas area and one of them had a friend that was rebuilding a engine in Houston las year and the car got flooded and got totaled he was keeping the engine hopping to find a 2002+ roller and it never happened so I was a lucky winner and got it for $ 9,000.00 no core exchange.

That's great news! What was the cause of the engine case hole? Timing chain failure?

Anyway, glad you're back on the road. Now, go out and enjoy that wonderful car!

No it was not the time chain coming loose it was a IMS change gone wrong or a very bad timing adjustment making one of the rods loose and this made two hols in the upper and lower case the IMS looked Brand new and it was in perfect conditions, making us guess someone just had work on it.
