Default What is this number on the engine block?

I have what appears to be an early replacement engine on my ‘99. I say “early” because the engine serial number is hand stamped and not the dot matrix style like most.

I did some engine cleaning today while she’s up on the lift and discovered these numbers. Any thoughts what they mean?

I think these numbers just identify the two case halves as a pair in the factory as they are machined as a matching pair
