Default Price Check on a 99 996

Newbie here, wondering if anyone could help me price a 99 C4 Tip with 152,xxx on the clock. Comparables are just all over the place, and obviously theres a disconnect between list price and actual purchase price but alleged sale prices on ebay, auctions houses - nothing is consistent, this is madness! ....Clean records 2-owner, but no IMS service history. How much would you or a reasonably educated buyer pay?

What kind of condition? I doubt more than $12-14K if it's basically in very, very, very good condition and price goes down from there.

Cosmetically decent, normal scratches on the bumper that stand out on the arctic silver paint. Mechanically, there is ticking noise from the engine bay which I guesss I also expect from a car this old. Engine rebuild in the near future for sure. His last counter was $8700 and I'm planning to accept his offer tomorrow morning........I'm taking anyone's final objections before we seal the deal.

I'd use Bring a Trailer's history of 996 sales to find similar comps.

There was a 2000 rain forest green carrera 4 with 137k miles that sold for $18,750 a few months ago.

Keep in mind that the C4 has a front differential and it might need a rebuild as well.

True, thanks for reminding me. Fluid change seems easy. In the DIY below, magnetic drain plug showed ALOT of metal shavings so these things maybe ticking time bombs for sure.

Are you aware of what a rebuild cost?

Seems like a small part, but I'll guess $2-3 grand. Here's one off of a 91k miles C4 selling for $999 and seller says its leaking fluid.

The irony is that flushing the fluid is probably easier than an oil change. Surprising more owners don't maintain this component.

Sorry, I meant engine rebuild cost as you mentioned in your first post...Good luck with your purchase!
Pictures or a link would be very helpful.

I think Bill meant engine rebuild cost.
These are not cheap engines to rebuild, even if you do it yourself.

Get a PPI. Before committing. If it is ticking and needs a full rebuild it is essentially a roller which seem to go for 5-7K. There are other causes for ticking. If you are planning on a rebuild, unless this is the exact spec, color you want, you are better off paying $20+ for a car with a good history.

The price is great if the car would pass a PPI, but it's my bet that the ticking noise could is bore scoring which means a full rebuild. You must understand that rebuilding these motors will cost as much as the entire car is worth. During a rebuild it's wise to replace all common known wear components like the AOS, RMS, IMS bearing, water pump, etc. This could easily push a rebuild towards $20K unless you have access to a ton of cheap parts and labor. For example, to just install the IMS on a tiptronic, you must remove the entire engine and transmission unlike manual transmissions where you can get by just removing the transmission alone. That's a lot more labor involved with tips.
