Did the article forget to mention that 99s are like 1/2 the cost of the newest .2 C4S models?
The 99s are special indeed. Most folks know that buying a first gen car is not always a good idea. Kinks can take 1-2 years to iron out. But the 99s took 3 years to finalize, and Porsche was able to negate any first gen problems by keeping things simple with a moderate engine and no frills options.
Then they starting making a lot of changes, and some of them got Porsche into trouble. It’s all in the goal of moving the ball forward, making a better, faster, more capable car. But when we look back in history, the 99s will be simple, pure, and probably desirable, once the quantity of the good ones starts to deteriorate and disappear from the market.
I wish I had a 3rd car so I could stop daily driving mine. It just turned 60k miles last week.

Last month after a year of searching I purchased a 996 '99 C2 Tiptronic. Silver with genuine GT3 alloys, optioned with full black leather interior, ruched leather seats and TC.
It looks amazing. I'd assumed I wanted an '02 update. But in the end I went with the best car I could get for the budget.
I parked it up next to am 02 C4S in Silver. And you know what, the simple clean lines of the C2 look better to my eyes. The C4S is a mess of skirts and spoilers. Sure the C4S looks fun in a Cars movie kinda way. But the precision jewel like quality of the original in silver is perfect. I'm a fan of the old pre-impact bumper cars for their simple clean design. The early 996 for me is perfect - better than the 993, which looks great, but really isnt a very "clean" design, for want of a better word.
I love the 996 lights. The car looks better everyday. Also the dials and dash now feels gorgeously retro. The soft glow at night and perfect font for the numbers etc... There is no terrible dated GPS or other computer junk. Just serious well designed German dials and switch layout.
And the amazing thing is that with 150ks on it, this car still drives like new. The performance is still close enough to a new C2 as not to matter.
I used to own a 2.7 1976 911. That was great, but when it was 20 years old it couldn't even keep up with a modern hot hatch. The 996 at 20 years old however is still properly fast on any road.
I would honestly rather have my 996 over a brand new one. (withstanding the fact I could sell the new one and buy a 996 GT3... LOL)

996 prices are on the move and good original examples in the colours sell fast it seems.
