I agree, but that's the way it sounded when I bought it 5K miles ago. I am going to have it diagnosed to make sure nothing hidden is going wrong.

UPDATE: AMCPILOT (my mechanic):
1. checked the codes, nada
2. checked the oil filter, absolutely clean
3. replaced the plugs and coils, used the bigger BERU's
4. checked the exhaust system extensively
5. put it all back together, sounds, runs good, no codes

Drove it to work this morning, ran great. Hads lots more low end power. I left it in D and didn't shift manually, didn't need to, lot's more torque.
