Default Should I drive it? Listen to this...

03 996, stock engine, 86K, has the single row LN engineering IMS bearing.

Going to work this morning just driving along and it seemed to get a little louder, like an exhaust leak.

Driving home it seemed ok, just a little louder than usual. I have the mild Fiskar exhaust, not stock.

Please listen to this and tell me, should I drive it? My mechanic is out of town for 3 weeks, so if you say it sits then it sits for a while.

What do you guys think?

DISCLAIMER: I am NOT an expert by any stretch of the imagination.

IMHO, that seems like an unhealthy sound .

That sounds a little bit like my car when I lift off the throttle at RPMs higher than that which the fuel injectors are spraying (part of the fuel saving mechanism on these cars). That’s usually above 1200 RPM and a completely closed throttle position while slowing. So if that is the case, then I would suspect exhaust - maybe mufflers or cats.

If it’s not that, then it doesn’t sound good.

Sounds like you should stop driving it until you can diagnose it.

If you're worried - don't take the risk it will only make it worse

I'm definitely not the one to diagnose engine problems based on sound, but I do know that Jake Raby claims that clicking/tapping sounds are often misdiagnosed as faulty lifters, but is actually a sign of bore scoring. Check out this video. Ironically, he is using a 2002 C4S as an example.

Does not sound good at all. Get underneath there and check all of the exhaust pipes, clamps, headers, manifolds for leaks or problems. When was the last time that thing had new plugs and coils? Last oil change and filter? Reason asking is it sounds like a tractor running...not smooth at all.

I'm no mechanic, but sounds exhaust related.

I wouldn't think bore scoring would get that loud, that fast, without experiencing other symptoms earlier.

Hoping it's something easily fixed!

If you are not the one who is going to do the troubleshooting/repair, I would just park it until your mechanic comes back. Best of luck!

Thanks for all the input!

To sum it up - it happened suddenly, no change in power. I tightened every nut/clamp I could, couldn't get to a few donuts. Just did a oil/filter change last week. I'm praying that it's just something with the exhaust, but to be safe I'll not drive it till he gets home and check it out.

Pull the oil filter.
Make sure you have something underneath to catch the few ounces of oil that will spill out.
Then look at the filter element itself.

^^ That’s actually a great idea and won’t cause any harm.
