I recently read a thread here on Rennlist where a guy attempted to supercharge his 996 and ended up blowing the motor on the track.

I asked my mechanic about supercharging and he categorically did not recommend it, in fact he said and I quote "If it wasn't installed by the factory and you don't change a myriad of other components, you are looking at Big Trouble" and interestingly enough my friend had a centrifugal supercharger on his early 90's 911 and it was horrible. It had a huge and totally unpredictable lag which propelled the thing like a bottle rocket, you just held on and prayed, It was great for drag racing but little else. I missed a gear and it revved to about 20,000 rpm (Ok I'm exaggerating) but it was a sickening sound and feeling Not Fun!

It would probably be easier and cheaper to just buy a 996 turbo.

But as a counterpoint, it is rare for me to think "Boy, I wish I was hurtling down the highway faster than my current car is capable of."

Yes.

If I could wave a magic wand and turn my C2 into a TT, I'd do it*. But there simply isn't any real-world (non-track) situation in which the existing engine will not allow the C2 to make any rational driver completely happy.

*Actually, if this happened, I'd probably sell or store the TT and buy another 996 - it being a better daily driver (IMO).

They usually don't report back after they blow their motors...

This is a true statement. And I never thought I would say this but a good exhaust note makes it that much more fun as well.

The same guy who fabricated his own bracket?

Regardless if it was not the right thing to do or better to just buy a TT, I appreciated his ability to try something on his own and the engineering behind it.

Yes, to all of us around the royal 996 table, he was the proverbial cup-bearer.
