Default Instrument gauges backlight not working

They do not come on. Does the stalk that resets the trip counter and is supposed to adjust the brightness of the gauges rotate? There is no give at all in mine no ability to turn clockwise or anti-clockwise. Can someone check to see if it is supposed to. I guess I might have to take the instrument panel out to fix this. Looking for a DIY to do this.

I don't believe the stalk has anything to do with the brightness (always helpful to have year/model when posting). The little dial between the gauges on the gauge cluster adjusts the brightness. Turn it gently to the right and the brightness increases.

Check fuses B1 and E1 before tearing the dash apart.

The light switch is a common failure point. Do all of your other exterior lights work normally? Is everything else electrical acting normal?

2003 C4 cab Fuses are all good. Maybe all 3 backlights went at once? The bulbs are only $1.75 (unless you get Porsche branded one $9.00)!! Ill buy them before I pull it apart just in case. All other lights and things work fine.

Did you try the little dial thing in between the gauges? The cluster lights are not very bright during the day, so I assume you are checking them in the garage or at night. I too find it hard to believe that all the bulbs would go out at once. How about the center console lights? Does the HVAC (brightness controlled by the little dial thingy as well) light up?

Took the whole instrument gauge panel apart. The backlights are all LEDs..TINY ONES. I can't solder so I guess I'm stuck with dark instruments at night. No way am I paying $1000 for new gauges! Maybe I'll get lucky and find a wrecked one with good gauges...

Mileage is stored in the instrument cluster, so if you get one from a wrecked vehicle it will not match mileage. Repair it. I forget...what is it....Palo Alto http://www.paspeedo.com/porsche.htm

Good advice. I know someone who had his cluster replaced with a used one. Not only didn't it fix the problem, but his car gained 30,000 miles in the process.

You can get the mileage corrected. Takes 5mins to do it when they have the right tools. Been there done that when I swapped the tiptronic gauge for a manual gauge when converting my tiptronic to manual gearbox. A used gauge cluster costed me around 400$.

Anywau I would look for someone who can repair it. Should not be too difficult once you know which parts you have to replace.

Interesting. I don't believe it would be legal to change the mileage in the US.

Yeah, I want to know how to do that too. I'm at 142K miles and want to roll back to say....20K. So please let me know how to do that...um...legally. Thanks.

So if your gauge breaks down and you replace it with one with lower mileage it is illegal to change it? I think it is illegal not have it changed (edit: not changed, to have it corrected)

There exist plenty of obd / odometer correction tools. Go google. The one who corrected mine did it in 5 min to set it back to the correct value.

I had this exact issue on my C2 cabriolet. All gauge lighting worked except the analog dash gauges. Sometimes they'd turn on right away and other times not at all. Sometimes they'd turn on after driving for 30 minutes and other times would work sooner if I hit a bump. Turned out to be the headlight switch. This was a diy job and cost me $200 Cdn for the new switch from Porsche stealership locally. Drove me crazy for nearly 3 yrs as it was so sporadic.

Since the mileage is stored digitally, you can't change it. Even with the right tools.

If you have a NEW cluster, you can set the mileage so it is consistent with the actual mileage. Once the cluster mileage reaches 62 (100 KM), it becomes read-only and can no longer be modified using the Porsche programming tools (PIWIS, PST2). There may be aftermarket tools you can use, but as far as Porsche is concerned, the mileage is not meant to be d1cked with on non-new clusters.

Check out modulemaster - they can fix the lighting for FAR less than a new cluster will cost...and probably less than you'll pay for a used one.

Maybe a silly question: do certain years have LED lighting and others incandescent? I've only had my 2000 (996.1) dash backlights apart to replace bulbs and they were incandescent. Should I expect my 2002 (996.2) to be non-replaceable LEDs?
