If I recall Dundon Motorsports Checked out on the Dyno about the airflow comparison between airboxes and they can pipe in if they read this. However, they also did a test on my cold air kit and found the 997 airbox to better. So we went with that and I do like the looks.

socal911t...You may also want to get a 997 oilcap as well....

Yea I have done it on my 3.6 996.

Everything fits except for the air funnel, so I used the original one. Like others have said, if you relocate the SAI pump then the whole thing should drop it. To change the airfilter, the whole 997 airbox will need to come out, as the bolts are screwed in from the bottom.

Installed, with silicon air pipe.

Isnt it top 997 and bottom 996?

i am looking at the 996 resonator box and the mesh openings in the underside of the airbox.

Yes! I have corrected the captions, thanks!

I bought a 997.1, 3.6 air box last summer. Did not get around to installing yet.
From what I understand, you need to use snorkel from 996 air box for good sealing of cold air coming into engine compartment and the box labelled 3.6 (997.1) does not require moving the air pump, but the box labelled 3.8 (997.2) does require moving pump.
Can someone chime in and let me know if this is correct?
Thanks
David

I used the 996 snorkel (with 3.6 box) and did not have to do anything to the air pump.

( I edited my earlier response because someone was asking about the snorkel and I had intake boot in my head when I answered )

I did the swap on mine , pretty much plug and play , mounts the same ,same maf, same air filter I reused my 996 snorkel as you don’t have to move the air pump and it mates to the lid better but I may get a ducktail in which case the 997 snorkel will fit better

FWIW, I installed a 3.8 box with the 3.8 snorkel and I did not have to move the pump but the pumps on the 99 are different than later years. I also changed the attachment piece that inserts into the rear lid as the 3.8 snorkel is not designed to work with the 996 piece.

Is there any difference in the openning size 996 vs.997, ie more air flow to box?
I am wondering because the X51 air box has dual inlets, and the minor engine differences internally doesn't seem to dictate doubling the (CFM ) volume of air going to throttle body?

No, size is the same but as you can see from this photo, the flexible part of the system switches to the snorkel versus the hood collar on the 996.

I did the same and it works great....I also believe you get more airflow.

^ I agree, the box pushes more airflow by other design features than just the inlet.

That change in moving the flexible portion to the plastic snorkel vs. rubber lid collar appears to be a cost savings change. The newer style collar would be much less to manufacture and the snorkel, once tooled, is a wash.

Will the 997 3.8 Airbox fit a 996.2, 3.6 (2002) C4S Tiptronic without buying a bracket or moving the airpump?
Will the snorkel from the spoiler have to be the 996 air box snorkel? Sorry for the questions, but could not get at clear answer from this thread.
