Default 996 sunroof rattle, won’t close

Since a few days I’m in the possession of a 996. All good except for one thing, the sunroof won’t close or open. It rattled as you can hear in the Vimeo video below. At the picture you can see the position of the sunroof.

Wat can it be? And what do I need to change?

Check the sunroof fuse C3 and D3. If you push the sunroof button and you do not hear the motor operate, then consult your owner manual for manually lowering the sunroof. It entails dropping the overhead lamps, removing the overhead plastic cover with a couple of screws, and there is an allen head wrench you insert into the drive motor to manually lower/close the sunroof. After that, you will have to figure out if it is the switch not working, blown fuse or you need a new sunroof motor.

What's the key to fixing the rattle? I have one of them myself.

Finally watched the video and heard the noise. My guess would be the gear on the sunroof driving motor has stripped...so a new motor is required.

That was my first guess too. Wouldn’t it be possible to only change the gear?

I see only one topic with probably the same problem but not the solution...

Get somebody clever with a 3D printer to make you one? They have all kinds of reinforced materials (carbon fiber, etc.) available.

Could also be an option in the end but a lot more hassle. No one else got an option?

2 of my 996 C4S's had problems with what I thought was the sunroof switch - Made noise and then would not open or close unless I 1st popped rear of sunroof up, then close, then it would slide back.
The problem turned out to be the sunroof motor - I know it sounds bazaar but yes 2 of my 3 C4S's had the identical issue.
*I suspect your issue could very well be the sunroof motor.
