Thumbs down Cabiolet top disappointing...... need advice!

I am very unhappy with my cab top. It is very noisy when closed.....rattles, squeks, etc. I know there are bullitens out there for the 2000 cab. My car is out of warranty and the dealer says I would have to pay the labor to perform the work. Boardwalk Porsche in Plano, TX says it may be about 2 hours of labor to correct it, but that he wanted the shop foreman to ride in the car first.

I have no problem paying a few hours of labor since it drives me crazy. My 99 Boxster top was very quiet and solid and the 996 reminds me of my Corvette conv I had back in college.

Has anyone had a similar problem?????????????

Mine was very quiet. I'd make the investment, they should be able to fix it...

had it fixed twice under warranty and it's starting to squeek again. Once they fixed it was solid.

I have an '02 cab that had a very noisy top when I first got it. Turns out it was wires in the top rubbing against each other. There's a TSB on it. Dealer fixed it under warranty and no further problems. So I think it's worth it to have the dealer do the work.

I found most of the noises are in fact sqeaks not rattles, caused by the rubbers squeaking between the top and the windows etc. You can order a special lubricant from Porsche to stop the sqeaks. I find it works very well and | apply it as soon as the squeaks return (maybe every 3 months or so) It's called something like Krilitox or something alike. Part number: 999.917.557.00.

I spent some time today on my top and it is MUCH quieter now. I replaced the two prongs that fit into the top of the windshield with the thicker upated kind (thanks for the email Eric) and did some major lubrication with the Porsche lubricant (expensive but good). There were still some squeeks I could not get to without spraying wd-40. HUGE difference. Thanks for all of your help.

I had the same issue - they replaced the mechanism that seals the top and the gasket where the top and windscreen meet - all under warranty. Good to go now...

Can you tell me more on the prongs. how much? Part numbers etc. I think I will do the same. Sounds good idea.

Sure. Part number for the prongs is 996-561-605-02 (there is a 1-012-605-04 beneath that). If you compare the new design with what is on your car you will see a big difference in thickness. About $28 each side.

I also got the special Porsche grease. This stuff is awesome. PArt number 999-917-557-00. I spent about $26 in this. My top was very noisy and these items made an enormous difference.

My car is out of warranty, but I would imagine the dealer would do these things under warranty for free. Good luck!

Thanks for this dweintraub.
Just to clarify, I need to order:
2 x 996-561-605-02
2 x 1-012-605-04 <<<<<<<<< what is this?

I already have the lubricant.
Cheers

You only need 2 x 561-605-02. They are about $28 each side. There might be two different part numbers. I removed the drivers side part to get the part number for you. So tell the dealer you need both side and not 2 drivers sides.

The other number you refer to was stamped on the same part underneath the 996-561-605-052. You probably will not need it to place an order but I was not sure what it was for so I included it also. To sum it up you only need to parts totaling less than $60. Good luck.

I rang the dealer to order them but he said that these parts are for an 03 upwards model only. Mine's a 2000 model. He is not sure if they will fit.
But if I order them I pay for them and he can't refund if they don't fit.

Any comments on this. What year is your car?

Cheers,
Berny

Eric from Bumper Plugs who also contributed to this post is the one who suggested I try those parts. I think his car is also a 2000 like mine. Yes they do fit. It is a much tighter fit which is why the top is quieter. Mine fit just fine with no adjustments. I was concerned the top might not close correctly at first but it works 100% and really quieted down the top in the front. The back end noises were cleared up with the Porsche expensive grease.

Let us know how you make out, but I think they will fit.
