Michelin 4S for 911
hi, I have a base carrera with 18" wheels option, and I am looking to get the new Michelin 4S, but they don't come in the correct size for the rear. They have the correct size for the front. What would be the maximum tire size we could fit on the rear ? I am not sure if a slightly incorrect size would fit.

I am assuming you have a 996.2 car? Personally I would run a 265/35R18 rear tire if that is the tire you want. That is what is on my 2002 and was the OE size in 2001 before they went with the wider 285/30.

I just installed a set of stock sized Conti Extremecontact Sport tires and I like them very much...$951 from Tire Rack and locally installed for $200. Also, Continental had/has(?) a $70 prepaid Visa card for the purchase.

I'm glad you do! I just bought my car with a brand new set of these and so far I hate 'em! I'm taking it back to have them re-Hunter Road Forced, maybe after that I'll like them better. It takes about 10 mins of driving in the morning to get them to un-flat spot. That's at 80 degrees and driven every day. I've never liked Conti's, but hey, I'm willing to change if this works out.

I've had Conti's on 3 different cars and all of them became very loud as they got older/worn. I am not sure if they are any better these days but MSS has been quiet until the very end.

On my 02 C2 I run Bridgestone S-04 225F/285R. They wear well, stick well and are pretty quiet. Firestone had the best price. I may try the Sumitomo next.

Totally agree with your statements, I have had multiple Contacts on 4 different German cars (P cars, MB's) They flat spot overnight and don't stick all that great, I'd rate them a c in general overall tire. I've have many Michelins and usually switch over when depth tells me they are needed. I also am looking at some replacement Michelins for my 03 996 T w 18" Carrera wheels. I think my challenge is PSM and if I do switch I might go for bigger front and rear tires but will need to check spec's as I run 15mm and 23mm spacers.

For the other side I have had Conti Extreme Contacts on our CTS-V daily driver. We have had zero issues. They wear well, will get tons of mileage on them, quiet, plenty of traction. We are in the SW, dont deal with any more than 1-2 seasons, rare rain, never snow. They are well reviewed in publications. I have not had a set on our 996 yet but I plan to when I need tires next if they are on sale. This is assuming they are still the same design tire we bought 2 years ago.
