Default Opinions 996 cab vs 997 cab

Moving this to 996 forum.

Looking for opinions between a 996 cab and 997 cab.

996. 2004 cab. Seal gray with black interior and top. 76k miles. 1 owner. Hard top. Separate winter wheels. All service history. Two keys. Wind screen. IMS, brakes and water pump just done. Turbo style wheels refinished. Asking $25k.

997. 2007 cab. Black on black. 86k miles. No service history beyond carfax. 1 key. No windscreen. Asking $30k.

I drove both cars and they drive very similar. Haven’t taken the 997 on the highway yet though.

Thoughts?

Either one I guess. The 996 has better history, but the 997 is newer with no IMSB issue. I’d say try to do research or PPI on the 997 and if it checks out, go for that one.

The 997 will hold its value better than the 996 and potentially appreciate more. While I love the 996, the 997s interior is also much better aesthetically (not to mention the exterior). However, with no history I would be concerned that you are looking at a 4-5k bill with the 997 off the bat. If you can stomach that I would probably do the 997.

Thanks. Yea that is something I’m hoping to avoid as I went through that (somewhat knowingly) with my current 03 986s when I bought it 3 years ago.

There is another car in the mix now. An 06 997 silver cab with black interior. Asking $33k. 57k miles. Has service records from 60k service done about 2 years ago (when the car had 51k miles). Had new tires at same time about 7k Miles ago (pilot sport). Also has service records from 40k service too which was done when the car was re-sold for the first time in ‘09 (with 32k miles on it). They did a CPO inspection then too. Both services done at porsche dealer. The 60k service plus tires was about $4k and the 40k service (also got tires then) was about $3600.

Wait a minute. The IMS issue affects all 997.1 models as well as 996.
The issue was eliminated with the 997.2

So if the 996 has had it taken care of and you don't know the history of the 997 then you would probably need to have it done.

Thanks. You are correct however the IMS is not replaceable without cracking the engine case on most 997.1s (aside from some early 2005s that had the M96 engine and the smaller bearing). The IMS is still there in the 997.1 but my understanding is it is a larger bearing and not much of an issue compared to the 986 and 996.

All 996 IMS bearings are replaceable with trans removal unless it is a replacement engine built after 2006.
All 997 with IMS (pre 2009) have an IMS bearing that needs case separated to change IMS. All ball bearing IMS, 1997 (Yes there were) to 2008 can have failures. Single row 2002 to 2005 seem to be the worst.

edited to say “most 997.1s”. Yes all 996 IMS are serviceable without cracking the engine.
