Without getting to far ahead of myself, I'm up late and my mind is racing...No car yet! But I need to put my 996 starter kit together.
What are the basics/must haves?
I have a couple of engine stands but used only for my old AC toys
Recommendations?
Forum rental program?
Anything else you can think of?
Wooden crates?
I do have basic hand tools, assorted sockets and wrenches, torque wrenches, jack and stands etc.
Harbor Freight 1000lb lift table (or alternative)
Floor jack or and jack stands (or ideally a low rise lift - I have a Max Jax that works great)
Good selection of metric hand tools
Torque wrench (I like the digital one)
The Knowledge Gruppe torque settings book
Bentley Manual
Factory shop manual CD
Rennline tool rental/borrow (dporto has recently started to lend his, but there are others)
Rennline "dial a friend"
A regular engine stand with spacers on the stock arms - you don't need a yoke like you do for the old aircooled engines, although I think you can get one, it isn't needed. You can use the lift table to lift the engine onto the stand. I did all the work I needed to on my last engine on a table (motorcycle lift table), but I didn't tear it apart like you are going to.
I have an engine stand adapter - used on two builds. Works great with standard 4 arm stand. Debating if I will need it in the future - on air cooled kick. Pm me if interested in buying/renting.
I'd get the Harbor Freight engine stand that folds. Then you can slide an ATV jack up to the engine to transfer it because the stand legs flare out. Don't need a yoke, but very handy. Could be had for about $200 if you look hard enough. HF trans scissor jack is very useful along with lift bars. 12 point for the bell housing bolt.

Thanks for all the responses, good stuff!
