Default Ok or not ok?

Hi,

I was hoping someone could give me some advice. I went to look at a Porsche 996 on the weekend, it's specification was:

996 C4 Coupe,
1999/V,
40,000 miles,
Full service history.

On the outside, the car was immaculate. I checked underneath the car and there was some dried oil leakage near the engine and gearbox. I presume this is to do with the RMS but the clutch seemed fine. I found some problems with the engine. It was only serviced (full) 6000 miles ago and I noticed the oil level and coolant level were both on minimum. I then removed the oil filler cap and noticed that the coolant had mixed with the oil.

Someone said this may be a head gasket job but how much would this cost to repair? I read somewhere that Porsche had to recall some engines because of porous bores in the engine block but this car has run out of the warranty period.

I wouldn't think the engine would cause this kind of problem at 40,000 miles, should I stay away and what other problems should I be aware of as I am a first time buyer?

Thanks,
Surj

I recently puchased a 996 and there a too many out there to choose from to settle for a car with question marks. Keep looking!! I wanted a 99-00 and found a great buy on a clean 00 cab with full service records. Good luck.

don't even consider that car unless the price is less than $10K so that you can pay for the new engine you're going to need...

Well, hang on a second ... how can you tell if the oil and coolant have mixed just by looking in the oil filler cap? Might he be referring to the typical whitish sludge that we all have in colder weather?

And if the RMS isn't leaking now, it might have been repaired already.

Thanks for your replies guys.

I have just been on the phone to Porsche and they told me that the 996 engine uses about a litre of oil every 1000 miles! Is that right? They also mentioned it's common to have slight oil/water residue in the oil filler pipe and on the cap. After a good run, they said this should clear up. Don't know what to think now so I am staying clear just in case.

my car in the last 6000 miles has used only 1/3 of that amount of oil, and it only has 6300 miles on it, i would stay away from that car

A litre of oil per 1000 miles. Are you certain it's a 996 not a lawnmower.

Mine uses less than a quart between oil changes, which are done at somewhat less than the manufacturer's recommended duration. I have heard that Posrche will quote a high consumption rate. This is misleading to imply that that rate applies to all cars. What ithe quoted consumption rate does apply to is the worst the consumption can be and still have a normally functioning engine.

Go find another car, there are tons of them out there just begging for a new home.......
