When I bought my 99 C4 the dealer said that the car had the motor sound package. I was trying to figure out what that was but could not find anything. Is it possible that he is talking about PSE being installed? If so how can you identify if the PSE is installed. The car is pretty loud but I haven't heard any other 911 recently to compare.
He said I had the HiFi package but then said it was equipped with the motor sound package as well. I know the 993's had this option but not sure what that is on the 996 or if he is just plain mistaken.
I don't think PSE was available as a factory option in MY99. Did you buy it used? Maybe they installed PSE or an aftermarket exhaust after it was purchased new.
Motor sound package was to the 993 what PSE is to the 996. So, yes, he was talking about an upgraded exhaust sound, calling it the motor sound package out of habit from the 993 days. Early PSE had NO switches. You should be able to confirm it with the option list.
Is there any way to look at the exhaust and confirm that it is the PSE through some markings or other. Where is the options list? I misplaced the window sticker but is the list somewhere on the car.
There's an option sticker on the inside of your trunk lid, near the front. Also should be one on the first few pages of the maintenance manual.

The first generation mufflers have much smaller bypass pipes:
