Default IMS-question...

So I'm thinking about installing the LNE IMS solution when I'm having my clutch done some time in the future. As it happens, I have a 3.6L fitted in my 99 C4, and this was done in 2008. I read that engines from late 2005 until 2008 have a different IMS bearing which cannot be replaced without a complete engine teardown. Does this apply to 996 M96 engines, or only the M97/997-engine?

True for the latest models in this series, but the only way you will know what bearing you have is upon physical inspection, so you might as well make your decision after you have pulled the engine and all that.

As I suspected... I figured I could save a few bucks by having a friend bring a new LNE-kit with him from the US, but I'll probably be better off knowing which bearing type I have by inspecting.

The trouble is, from what I’ve read, there is no easy way to know exactly what bearing you have because Porsche mixed and matched bearing and shaft types even in the same year during crossover. To make matters worse, I don’t think there’s an easy way to know exactly what engine you have.

I’d let Jake and others chime in. See if you can provide an engine serial number. Not sure that will be definitive, but might help.

If it is a stock engine the serial number will pin point the year.
If it was a factory rebuild then it would depend on when it was rebuilt. Factory used the bearing du jour, rebuilt in 2005 or later probably big single row. Question then is if it was in storage and and if so how long.

Thanks again, guys. That video gave an excellent summary. I guess I'll inspect when replacing the clutch and take it from there.
