Changing fluids... Hot or Not?
Looking to see what the current opinion is on changing my motor oil and trans fluid.
Should I do it cold since everything should be in the sump and the bottom of the trans or warm them up first?
I've heard it a million different ways... But looking to see what direction people are going!

The hot oil will return to the bottom of the engine in no time when it's hot. You'll get more oil out when it's warm and as an added bonus you'll get it out a heck of a lot faster. Check your oil level cold, change it hot.

Just be super careful because HOT is HOT ! and will give you serious burns if you get it on you. These engines hold their temp for a long time. I like to go for a drive to get it up to operating temp, then let it sit about an hour before draining the oil. Most if not all the oil will be back in the sump, and though it'll still be extremely warm, it won't peel you're skin off if you get a little on you (don't soak in it though...).

I always take my time when doing an oil change on the 996. I drain the sump, put the drain bolt back on, and wait a day or so, and drain again. There
is always another half quart or so oil coming out the second time. I assume this oil is from inside the IMS.

I prefer to change the oil hot, but I would not start/run a cold engine just to warm it before an oil change. I believe the drain will be more complete if it was parked hot and you drain it cold than if you start a cold car just to warm the oil. It will never be "hot" unless you have been driving it for a while.

I change the oil cold and then had a problem with a stuck oil filter... it spun inside my filter wrench while I reefed on it with a long 1/2" wrench. Warmed up the motor and it came right off.

I drive to the store, get oil, get sheet plastic, lay it out on the garage floor, and have at it.
By that time the oil is warm if not hot.
Simple surgical gloves keep the oil off the hands and paper towels (at least one roll handy) to wipe off the hot oil.
Actually, the hot oil isn't what burns, it's hanging on to the damn oil plug so it doesn't drop into the bin!

I change my oil warm. Like others say it helps keep crap in suspension. That said, I have not done my 996's oil myself. Will be switching to LNE Spin-on Filter adapter when I do. Have been holding off installing the adapter since a different type of adapter is used in the IMS Solution.
