Do you mean the engine temperature sensor...or the actual electrical connector that I think is part of the engine wiring loom? The sensor is Part #8 here

The actual connector is what I need .Yes- it is part of the engine loom but surely there has to be a way to buy it separately . I don't have a picture of the connector because it is gone .

In my experience I've found Porsche don't generally sell the connector on the loom end - unless its a repair kit.

A bit of investigation is unfortunately required unless you can get one off a salvage car as I don't think a repair kit is available for that sensor.

I have been investigating with zero results .So far I have not found a salvage yard that will cut up a loom .Can't say that I blame them ...............

Thought that might be the case, do you have a pic of the sensor end?

I don't believe that is it .It's 4 wires one of which is blue/red .If I sound a bit vague that's because my engine is long gone and a ls6 now occupies the space .From memory your picture looks like the oil level/oil temp connector.

The second picture isn't it either .The 1999 996 and boxster have a different sensor then the latter models which are two pin and unfortunately different resistance values .

Just re-read that you specified 4 pin not 2!

Audi plug:

Possibly, i'm not entirely sure! Based on my quick research most of the 996 engine bay temp sensors appear to be two pin not four.

Do you have a pic of your sensor and its pins?

If the sensor is 2 x 2 perhaps its not the engine bay temp sensor and could be the coolant temp sensor, that is 2 x 2:
