K-40 remote is what you want, with laser defuser. I've had this in my 996 CAb for 5 years. Negotiate with the installer....should be $1200 - $1500 average.

Mine works very well, and I have comparisons to many other units. I use a V-1 in two other vehicles, but needed a stealth installation in the cab.

My red LEDs are located just below the gauges, so there was no drilling. Switch is up under the dash, left of the steering column, out of sight.

I have the K-40 in my M5 and love it. I have used V-1's and cannot tell any difference between them and the K-40 detector. Currently looking for a C4S and will put either the K-40 or SRX by Escort in it. Both are way stealthy and have various strengths and weaknesses. Those are the two I would research.

Just get yourself a V-1, have it hard wired, mount it high, and use the remote display. The V-1 won't be as stealthy as the K-40 install, but it would be portable! You could take the V-1 with you on a trip in another car.

The V-1 is always a solid performer and with the remote display, it shouldn't attract too much attention.

Oh yeah, pocket the extra $1100!

If stealth is the most important factor, go with the K40.

The V1 in its current form is still very hard to hide, but it is portable.

Like vitaman above I too have run both the V1 and the K40 in the same vehicle at the same time but, unlike vitaman, I found that the V1 is definitely better...better distance, clearer warning and would alarm to superwideband Ka when the K40 often remained silent!

They are both very good radar detectors. It just depends on which features are the most important to YOU.

I had the Passport SRX radar detector and laser shifter installed stealth. It's awesome. Both the radar detector and the laser shifter has saved me multiple times. Here's how it looks on the console (below the nav screen). Downside: expensive.

SRX has saved my bacon many times.
Virtually invisible, K Ka X and laser detection + laser jamming tested at over 90% effective in car magazines. It's also customizable, I've got the X band detection disabled 'cause cops don't use it in my area and apparently supermarkets do.
I have the display mounted above my right knee. you can only see it from the driver's seat.
