I'm looking at a 996 on the East Coast and I'm on the West Coast.

Figure I would ask the guy to drop it at a PCA mechanic I find for a PPI, but If I buy the car and decide to have it shipped out, what is the safest way to do the deal?

Any thoughts much appreciated

 

Safest? If you're planning on shipping it, have shipping lined up in advance. Fly out, check the car out, do the transaction, have the paperwork in hand, bring it to the shipper, fly home and wait for delivery.

All things considered, airfare isn't that expensive these days.

 

If you're concerned about being shorted, there are a number of car escrow companies you can hire if you use teh Google machine. Car shipping, in my experience, good quotes came in at about .75-.85c per mile. Good on you for requesting a PPI, remember that small things can be fixed and big things are worth the $400!

I would advise against a sight unseen purchase. Set up a PPI from someone that knows these car inside and out, fly out for the PPI and have a shipper lined up in advance. Jake Raby has a trustworthy shipping Co he uses. Maybe get their info.

Looks like the point of it is to stick to major online firms. I used one to sell my wife's old car when we got married because her car was a beater and it cost me $20 to not get hosed $2000. Everything went smooth so I can't review the protection.

 

Maybe i got lucky but i had my car shipped from seattle to delaware with an onine shipper. Was a painless deal and cost 1050 for an inop car. The carrier shipped it in an enclosed trasport.

Purchased a car in Colorado . Flew out for the ppi and a test drive. Had a local transport company lined up for the trip back.
My thought on using a local company here in Cali was if anything went wrong it would be easier to take a local company to court then one on the other side of the country.
Fortunately the car was in good shape when it showed up

 

I've purchased 10 or so cars online, sight unseen. A lot of it comes down to the communication you have with the person before the deal is done. That being said lots of the cars I purchased were under 5K, so I really did not care. What I did in those situations is pay them $500 down. I give them 90% of what is remaining when the car is on the truck (which I have arranged), I send them the remaining money once I get the title.

When I bought my 996, I found an Indy mechanic that was also a dealer. I had them do a PPI. Once a purchase price was agreed to, I paid them an additional $250 to handle the sale/take possession of the car. It's also where the car got picked up. I wired the money to the dealer. Dealer gave the money, minus their cut to the seller.

As it turns out, had I just spent a bit more time on Rennlist before the sale, I would have seen the seller was Gator, and he was a super honest guy (something I already suspected by talking with him) and I would not have spent the $250 with the dealer.

 

Bought mine from a seller in NC last year (I'm in CA). A RL member that lived close by went to go look at the car for me. Met the seller and went for a test drive. We Facetimed during the test drive. The seller took it to a trusted Porsche Indy in the area and I paid for the PPI. Had it shipped (open trailer, around $900 I think). Was skeptical at first but after getting good communication with the seller I felt good about it. Overall it was a smooth transaction.

 

Here is the direct info. I got to him through a generic website. They r basically a broker and your contract gets accepted by a transport company. The nice thing was i was able to negotiate the cost a little and they were very responsive and kept me updated. They have several levels of transport and u should have insurace on your car before u ship. U have to request covered transport too.

I used PaySafe online escrow service for an out of state vehicle purchase. Went very smoothly. Seller texted me a photo of the car loaded on the truck and photos of the shipping documents and I released funds. Easy peasy. Cost me about $250 fee for the service.
