Advice on Rev Range before 2001 996 purchase
Hello all,
This is my first posting so please bear with me. I need some good advice from the community on a possible purchase.
I'm looking at a 2001 996 in rare color that is excellent cosmetic condition inside and out. 63k miles. Seller wants 20k. I had a PPI and the mechanic said there are two possible red flags. The Cam Deviation is out of range. Bank 1- 7.25. Bank 2- 3.37. I'm willing to have the work done to fix this. I've gotten quotes from 2k - 4k.
The thing that I can't get a sense of is the Rev Range DME. For this year of car, my understanding is there are only two ranges. I've spoken to two mechanics who say the numbers mean the car was "driven hard." The third didn't think it was as big an issue. I love the car's uniqueness but don't want to have a big engine problem on my hands right away.
The numbers are as follows.
Range 1- 18,034 @ 1831.9 Hrs.
Range 2 -5 @ 122.0 Hrs
Total Hours = 1988.4
Thoughts?

Hi DK,
My opinion is with 1988 hours on the engine, and your last Range 2 ignitions at 122 hours, they are nothing to worry about. You've got a lot of Range 1's, but those are fine, and these cars are happiest when they are driven hard.

^ Durametric + a PC is common among enthusiasts, shops use PIWIS, PST2, or other "official" Porsche diagnostic computers that can read this logged in the Motronic unit.
DK_LA, definitely fix the cam deviation. Don't know validation of this, but have been told by my mechanic that out-of-whack cam deviation can cause the... *whispers* IMS to fail.
