Bypass pipes
So I’ve been thinking about buying some muffler bypass pipes and probably putting some insterts in them right away, based on reading what others have said. But I was wondering if anyone here uses them currently, and if so how long have you had them. The idea of shedding forty some pounds off the rear of the car is very enticing. Last summer, for kicks, I removed my mufflers and went for a short drive. Holy moly did the car sound angry and awesome, like a cup car that’s been spending time doing PEDs and has an anger issue. But my butt dyno felt like there was a substantial loss in low end torque, and the drone was pretty crazy. I’m sure I would attract a lot of interest from the local boys in blue who don’t have a whole lot of real crime to fight around here, hence why I am thinking those cool little instert thingies would be a good idea to couple with the pipes.

I ran bypass pipes on my 997 for more than a year. I loved the sound - but it had its drawbacks. Drone, no more stereo, no more phone, no easy conversations.
But did I mention the noise? :-)
Yes - there was a loss of low end on the 3.6 in the 997. I imagine the 3.4 would magnify that.
My current car runs a catless X-pipe with Fabspeed Maxflo's. I wish they were a bit louder - but above 4K rpm it sings like a cup car.

Im curious about doing the muffler bypass with inserts as well from research the inserts should add some of that loss of low end torque back and make the sound tolerable.

I have them on my 99 Cab, and a close friend has them on his 99 Cab and love them. We both have about the same exhaust set up, equal length headers, X- pipes with 200 cell cats and by-pass pipes with 3 disc inserts with all caps installed. Two differences are my by-pass pipes are 2.25 OD and slip OVER the X-pipe, with 2.25 inserts, his is 2.00 inserts in a metric pipe that BUTTS up to the X-pipe. Both sound fantastic, but his is higher pitch and more exotic sounding, mine is lower pitch and more growl. As far as power, can't really tell, we rebuilt his engine before the exhaust system and it is now a 3.8 liter, so yea his is faster now...lol

Another option is to take a pair of magnaflo 14158 mufflers to a local custom muffler shop and have them cut the cats just after the pre O2 sensor and pipe them in. The local track made me install some cans because straight bypass was so loud it was annoying.

I have a set of bypass pipes I had bought from an RLer that I never used because I tried supercups first and did not like them for daily driving because of drone. But on the track....god it was awesome. So I figured the bypass would be worst from a drone standpoint and never put them on. I then went with Maxflow for a couple of years and they were a great compromise and now going with a custom set up. In any case, I have those bypass exhaust pipes available if you are interested. I also have my 200 cell cats, stock headers and Maxflos for sale (though the maxflos are committed assuming shipping to Canada is not crazy...finding out today)

BUT.....
I have wondered what the Super Cups would be like with the X-pipe.
How do the Supers compare to the complete bypass pipes (if anyone knows)?

Right in between the Maxflo's and the bypass. Supercups sound really good. But you still save about 30lbs with a magnaflo 14158 setup which if fairly common on the SP996's.

I am also playing with the idea of Bypass Pipes for my C4S, but my concern is the interior noise - would it be too much for a daily driver? relative question I am aware. I searched on YouTube but couldn't really get a clear understanding of sound inside..any thoughts Gents?

I have Maxflo's now attached to catless X-pipes. At idle they sound almost stock. On track - very much like a cup car. I love the sound.
BUT.....
I have wondered what the Super Cups would be like with the X-pipe.
How do the Supers compare to the complete bypass pipes (if anyone knows)?

Here is a video of my close friends 99 Cab just after we did the engine rebuild and upgraded to 3.8 liter on the first start up. Has equal length headers, GUTTED CATS, with by-pass pipes and 3 disk 2.00 inserts. The revs were kept low at under 4k for break-in purpose. The sound was amazing !! Then we installed X-pipe with 200 cell cats to quite it and give more exotic timbre. The result was perfect, no drone, completely daily driveable past the cops if you were not hard on the gas, but purely Hayabusa sounding in the high revs at full throttle. The cats made a HUGE difference.
