Replacing IMS what else should I do
I have an 2003 996 Targa, with 74,000 miles. Its a tiptronic
I am considering doing the IMS upgrade, so question is what else should I consider doing while I have the engine/transmission out.
Water pump, rear seal, what else. Im just trying to put a budget together while the car is parked for winter.
Thanks
John

I'm in a similar situation. I got the tranny dropped a couple days ago, but I'm not dropping the engine.
I'm wondering if I should replace the AOS. It may be easy to do if your engine is out. My engine is still in the
car but not having the tranny in the way may make replacing the AOS not total hellish.

I recently bought my 2001 996 with similar mileage (I had 72k) and did the following:
IMS and RMS (my shop had a combo special on this service, ask on this as many offer it)
Coolant tank (starting to crack)
All belts and hoses (why not)
New spark plugs
I'd take time to fix things and run through entire car now so you don't have to go back in 6 months.

(edited: I thought you had a manual, cleaning up references to that)
I don't know the tiptronic at all.
I think some people update the bolts in that area that join the case halves.
I have read here that you have better access to the air oil separator, but can’t verify that (I did mine with the engine out of the car).
I don’t see/recall how this job gives you any better access to either spark plugs or the water pump, but I may be missing something (I also did these jobs with the engine out of the car).

You'll have more areas to move into for the AOS replacement...if that makes sense. You may still need to lower the engine at the back to gain more space. Removing transmission does nothing for you in terms of easier access to WP or Spark plugs

The OP says the engine/trans will be out of the car. In that case I would definitely do the AOS and maybe the associated hoses as well. And the coolant tank would be super easy too and should be replaced if it is the original.

I'd also look at replacing the different engine sensors. Check how brittle the vac lines are and replace those if needed.
