Default Key won't turn in ignition switch...

Last week I wanted to drive my '99 coupe. I inserted my key into the ignition but it wouldn't turn to the right at all. My battery is fully charged, so is this the standard ignition switch replacement or something else? I tried the search function but didn't find what I was looking for. It's as if the steering wheel lock won't allow me to turn my key to the right. What is the issue? It was so cold last week I didn't want to replace my switch until it gets a bit warmer.TIA

Steve, are front wheels pointed straight? I ask because you mention steering wheel lock.

Wiggle the steering wheel.

Sometimes I have to wrestle with my wheel to unlock it, either that or bad switch. I’d go ahead and order a replacement or 2. Easy DIY and for some reason that ignition switch can cause seemingly unrelated issues.

This is guy has some very helpful diy’s

hardest two two things about this job iscontorting body to fit under dash and getting enough hand torque to turn the screws.

Hi Pete. Yes wheels are straight. How are you and are you driving your 911 in the winter?

Same with mine, but not now. Actually I bought one several years ago but never had to replace it till now. Temps have gone back up from below zero to a predicted 40s by the weekend. I hope this will fix my issue. Thanks for the reply and tutorial.

The key being stuck - or refusing to turn - is yet another symptom of the bad electrical portion of the ignition switch. Happened to me in both the 986 and 996.

After reading Pedro's fix it sure sounds like a simple fix for a change. Thanks SCHN3LL, that's why I had a spare IS.

You bet! It's a ways off in July. Here in Indy the weather got cold just around Christmas AND it will be in the 50's the next two days!.....so the Winter ain't bad. No pcar projects going on but I bought a '65 Spitfire a couple months ago and that has me buying up parts

Clearly since it worked in the door, this is not the issue. But I figured I'd share the story anyway so someone can get a good laugh. A few years ago I drove a silver Z4. I stopped at the grocery store, ran inside and grabbed a couple things and then came back out. Walking up to the car I pressed the remote unlock and nothing happened. Odd... tried again. Nothing. Maybe the battery is dead? I put the key in the door and it wouldn't turn. Now I'm really perplexed. Tried again, nothing. Remote unlock, nothing. Then as if on cue a big van parked next to me pulls out of their spot and on the other side is my car. Identical cars, just a couple spots away. I looked around for a hidden camera but all I saw was some guy laughing at me.

I had no idea how many white Jeep Cherokees there are until we bought one. At least once a week I stand next to the wrong Jeep. The newer Cherokees have passive keyless entry - when you touch the door handle, it unlocks if the key fob is nearby...so to the casual observer, it looks like I'm walking around trying the door on cars that aren't mine. If this was Texas, I probably would have been shot by now.
