Center Console Cup Holder Removal

Center Console Cup Holder Removal
Anyone have a step-by-step for removing the OEM cup holder located under the center console vents? I need to remove it temporarily to repair a broken spring. Read somewhere to "just pull it out" of the console. I pulled (gently) but it doesn't seem to move at all and I don't want to break anything. Thanks in advance.

I'm getting ready to do this as well. I don't have a step by step but from what I've seen you need to remove the horseshoe and there are some type of clips that need to be depressed for the cup holder to pull out. Also, there are 2 different styles of cup holders, not sure if the removal process varies for them.

what type of cup holder you have. 1 or 2?
if its No 1, you will have to remove the horseshoe, remove the air vent, stereo system atc. remove the main frame, and only then you can get to the clips holding the cup holde.
you will have to press it down, and pull it towards you. (i can post more detailed pics if you will need).
if you have No 2, just remove the piece trim around it, remove screws, and pull towards you.

Make sure you press the clips down on top of the ac vent if you remove that. They can bend or break and can’t be replaced. Ask me how I know

Also when you open cup holder assembly go slow and take lots of pics cause a lot of stuff wants to fall out. Springs arms etc

I had mine replaced at the dealer and it was EXPENSIVE! Labor was the main item but seeing what needs to be done and with my limited skill set I am happy they did it. Now I don’t use it anymore because it’s so flimsy, my full cup of coffee shook enough that some liquid spilled on my brand new double din Pioneer head unit and trashed that. Thankfully the audio shop was incredible and got it replaced under warranty. Since then I got a pair of Ultimate Cupholders (no affiliation, just a great product) that holds the coffee at floor level.

To take mine out I removed everything -ac vent ,radio frame with radio attached, ac head unit. If you get it out, open it up carefully and take pictures. I just had 2 different ones apart. You can post pictures and I can tell you what’s broken and how to reassemble. Don’t lose anything or force (break) anything Gunar

took some pictures for you, as i was wrapping up my dash today.
after removing the horseshoe, you need to remove the AC vent.
use a large flat screwdriver, and very carefully insert it between the dash and the vent. pressing down the locking tab on both sides, and gently pulling it towards you, will remove it out of the dash.
this is the location of the tabs. in this picture the vent is half way out.
here is a better view of the tabs with the vent out. to give you a better perspective on what you are battling with.
after the vent is removed, you will get access to the locking tabs on the top of the cup holder. you need to press them down, and pull towards you.
here is a closeup of the left tab.
its very hard to remove the cup holder, as you need to press both tabs and pull the cupholder at the same time.
i suggest to remove the whole frame, and work on the cup holder on the bench. (will not hurt to ask someone to pull it for you while you press in the tabs).
you just need to remove two screws on each side of the frame, and it will slide out with the cupholder in one piece.
hope it helps.

I just replaced my cupholder on my 02' C2 Cab. Actually pretty easy for me, 60 mins from rolling it in to driving it out of the garage.
The cupholder assemble needs to come out the back of the frame. There's no way to pull it into the cabin without cutting the frame. But it's only 4 screws so pretty easy all in all.
Thanks meirswartz!

Reviving this old thread. I have cup holders in my ‘02 cab, the kind that slide out from the top of the horseshoe. My front cover is broken and fell off. Now the cup holder will not stay in and latched. I have a new front cover (carbon fiber and ugly) on order from eBay. Can I replace the front cover without removing the whole cup holder mechanism? TIA
