My C2 996 is my daily driver and I live in California and have to pass smog. One of my Cats rattles so I need to replace it. I searched on line and bought a Magnaflow Cat. When my Indie tried to install it, he noticed it was 2 inches too short on the muffler side. The overall dimension is 30 inches which they say meets their spec. The attached picture shows the new one lined up on top of the old one. Difference is about 2 inches. Anyone else have this problem? Short of leaving the state I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.
Is the cat you purchased CARB-approved for use on your vehicle? If not, your car may still fail smog if the inspector notices that the cats have been modified.
5 years ago, I wouldn't have even mentioned this, but now that both of my "suspected polluters" have to go to STAR stations where they tend to be much more detail-oriented, I could see this actually happening...
It looks like you're pretty deep into this, but for what new catalytic converters sell for, you want to be darn sure your new cats are street-legal.
And yes, moving out of CA is starting to seem like a better and better idea. Eventually, I'm going to have to buy some "Hybrid Synergy Drive" stickers for the 996 so the environazis don't key my car.
Thanks guys. Magnaflow says that I have purchased the correct, CARB compliant, Cat for my car. I agree that modifying the Cat won't work, but I think I can add a short piece to the muffler pipe to make it work. Sure would be easier to live in another state.....so many more choices.

The section of tubing you have to weld on is "after" the cat, thus it remains in its intended location. I would still bitch about it, so that they can issue an engineering change on their end.
idk brother. I live in NJ. All I have to worry about is my CEL being off and I pass emissions. My daily has had a cracked windshield for 3 years, modified exhaust (resonator removed) and I still glide through every time.

Dont get me started on that. The amount of times I've had to clear check engine lights for gas cap codes is ridiculous. Started checking it myself every time I get gas..
