Hi all! I am happy to announce I took the plunge and bought my first Porsche 911. I am officially a Porsche owner.
One question that I had for you all. The car seems to sound very loud with a very throaty roar. I think it's because the previous owner added an aftermarket exhaust.
I got a pic of attached to this post. Any ideas what this part is? I can't read the company name of the part because it's obscured by the clamp ring. Is this the reason that the car is so loud?
AWE Tuning, likely their high-flow catalytic converter. I could tell for sure if I could look at my car but that's not possible at the moment -- thanks, Hurricane Harvey .
The stock 996 exhaust system sounds rather like an asthmatic Dyson vacuum cleaner. Different tuners developed aftermarket exhausts to improve the sound and in my experience most of them deliver louder and throatier by design. Some also drone within different RPM ranges which is best avoided. The Fister mufflers, which employ their version of the "gundo hack" (partial muffler bypass") also add a sweet-sounding crackle and mimic the Porsche Sports Exhaust.
Some of the aftermarket pieces, namely headers and the catalytic converters, might yield slight HP and torque gains (or slightly reshape the HP and torque curves); be skeptical of manufacturer claims in this regard. Mufflers just add sound and make you feel like a 10-year old again which is why I bought mine!
Look at the AWE website where they will further explain their Porsche products available. To my knowledge they are a reputable source for aftermarket parts.
Hey Cuda. I've wanted to own a 911 ever since I was 12 and I'm now 45. The only thing I could afford was a 996. I did a nationwide search and eventually found a 2002 Carrera 4 Cabriolet in Guards red. I paid about $19.5K for her. Man is she awesome. I've never owned a car this powerful. The last car I owned was a 2013 MINI convertible.
